Bird Photography. At first glance it may seem like a strangely niche pursuit that wouldn’t have enough depth and variety to keep someone engaged for years and years, but I continue to find the more I engage with it the more I realize there is to learn and explore. I caught the bug when I was 14 and bird photography has basically been on my mind ever since, though during that time both what the act of doing bird photography looks like and my images themselves have repeatedly transformed in many peculiar ways.

While taking images may be the outward motivation and objective, what really gives the longevity is being out in peculiar and beautiful areas, at peculiar and beautiful times, witnessing peculiar and beautiful creatures that I would never find myself in a position to behold had it not been for this seemingly mundane and niche interest.

My current stop on my photographic journey is to take images that show wider scenes that birds inhabit. In my images, the birds themselves are often very small and rather unimpactful in the frame, and so in a sense my images are no longer of birds as much as about birds.

Peace, adventure, exploration, challenge, struggle, creativity, art, science, skill, pursuit, patience - discovery. That is what bird photography is really about for me. These are all merits that have universal appeal and many find them in many places, but I have found bird photography interweaves them in a great way.
